Fathers day is a fantastic time to celebrate

It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the unique bond between fathers, grandads, step-dads, and all their loved ones. But what sparked this heartfelt tradition? Outside of Catholic customs, the concept of a special day for fathers only took root in the 20th century. It all began in America after a devastating mining accident in December1907, which tragically claimed over360 lives, leaving around1,000 children without their fathers. A local girl named Grace Clayton, having lost her own father that year, approached her pastor with a heartfelt request to honor all those fathers who had perished. The service took place in Fairmont on July5th,1908, but it went largely unrecognized, overshadowed by Independence Day festivities and another local tragedy. It wasn't until1910 that the celebration gained real momentum. In Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd—known as the 'Mother of Fathers Day'—was inspired to propose this special day after hearing a sermon for Mother's Day. Having lost her mother during childbirth, she felt fathers deserved similar recognition. She initially suggested June5th (her father’s birthday), but due to preparation challenges for pastors, the celebration was ultimately set for the third Sunday in June of1910.
